Older adults throughout Marin face a myriad of challenges—from getting help to remain in their homes to receiving a range of medical services. Several residents shared their stories in a video MCF made. Despite their differences, these people share something in common: They have caring and knowledgeable people in their lives.  Hear their stories.

MCF Strategic Plan:

Successful Aging

The growth rate of the older population in Marin is the fastest in the state. The largest subset of this population growth is in the over-85 age group. The service system and other relevant resources will be pushed to new limits. As older adults age, they face increasing difficulty in remaining in their own homes or other living situations without increases in home health and other supportive services.

Older adults face a unique set of challenges, including isolation, increased falls, malnutrition, lack of information on resources, and lack of appropriate supportive services. These challenges make this population more vulnerable to hospitalizations and unwanted institutionalization.

Older adults are important assets to our communities, and keeping them healthy and engaged in community life is beneficial for the county's entire population. Community engagement in older life is correlated to improved health and quality of life and improvement of overall health indicators.

Strategy: Promote a comprehensive, efficient, and effective system of services and programs that allows for successful aging by older adults

MCF is funding within three areas: We are supporting efforts to develop a coordinated system of health and social services for older adults. Increased coordination will assist services providers and clients alike, and older adults will be able to more easily access comprehensive information on programs and services.

We are funding programs to strengthen the delivery of core health and social services. These include home health care, transportation, case management, and medical services. We are also funding professional development for service providers on delivering culturally relevant services for specific populations.

Thirdly, we are funding efforts to foster volunteerism and community involvement for older adults. Not only are older adults an important asset in our community, but staying engaged is correlated to improved health and quality of life.
