Awards Programs at MCF
The Marin Community Foundation honors the outstanding work of Marin County individuals and organizations through the following two awards programs:

The Beryl H. Buck Awards for Achievement are awarded annually to an individual and an organization. This year's awards honor extraordinary achievements in the focus area of "Promoting Social Justice in Marin." The individual award recipient, Cesar Lagleva, will receive a $10,000 cash award, and the organizational award recipient, Legal Aid of Marin, will receive $25,000. The awards will be presented at the Celebration of Giving event in June. More information on the recipients will be posted on our website later in April.

The MCF Leaders in Giving Award honors local philanthropists--individuals, families, businesses, and others--whose charitable giving makes a significant impact and serves as a model for others to give back to their community. It recognizes those who, by virtue of their thoughtful generosity, are leaders in showing the importance of personal giving to improve the lives of others.

The recipients in 2006, the first year this award was given, were Susie Tompkins Buell and Mark Buell. This couple's giving has been both broad and deep--and global and local--for many years. They bring to their giving a pervasive believe in social and economic justice, and they are making an impact on women's and girls' issues, the environment, education, and other important topics that will be felt for many generations to come.

In 2007 this award was given to Katie Smith, a Marin business woman who has been a staunch supporter of issues that don’t come easily to many people in Marin, including homelessness, basic health care, and the provision of food to people who are hungry. She has also reached out to friends and colleagues to encourage them to get involved in the community.

MCF is a major funder of the Marin Human Rights Commission’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Awards, which honor adults and youth for their service in civil and human rights.

And, since 2005, the Foundation has supported the Marin Women's Hall of Fame, which honors local women who serve as role models and demonstrate excellence in a wide range of endeavors.
