Community Grants: Restoring Ecosystems

Goal:
To preserve and protect the ecological health of Marin’s important ecosystems

Overview: Marin County has an abundance of open space and protected natural areas, including wetlands, streams, estuaries, native old growth and oak woodland forests, and grasslands. Nevertheless, many of Marin County’s treasured ecosystems and natural habitats suffer from the proliferation of exotic and invasive plants and animals, or are simply being neglected due to limited funding and staffing. Marin County is home to some of the world's most unique ecosystems—such as rare coastal wetlands and shoreline habitats that support a diversity of birds, some listed as endangered or threatened—and a number of native and sometimes threatened species. For example, Marin County currently supports over 10 percent of the remaining Coho salmon population in California and a viable population of steelhead trout, both federally listed as endangered on the Pacific Coast.

Under this goal, MCF will support projects that incorporate the following strategy:

Strategy: Restore and sustain the diversity and abundance of native flora and fauna within Marin’s parks, open space reserves, and natural areas, with a priority on partnering in projects where there is substantial local, state, and federal funding.

Process: Register with the Grant Application Center starting September 1, 2008, which is the Registration Open Date for this goal. This system enables you to complete and submit all application materials online.

Once you have registered, please complete and submit a Letter of Intent (LOI), even if you have received funding from MCF in the past for this kind of work.

If your LOI is approved, you will be notified how to prepare and submit a full proposal, also using the Grant Application Center.

Deadline for LOI: October 1, 2008
